Text Connections

Text Connections:

For my text connections essay I have chosen the genre of crime to study and make connections with. the texts i used to make these connections were Witness, Shawshank Redemption, Out of the blue and my own film Point Break. the two significant connections i made using these texts were the theme of violent crime, theme of crime in a conservative lifestyle. i also saw a connection through the aspect of unexpected crime.

A connection I was able to make between texts was the idea of violent crime I saw this idea in Shawshank Redemption and Out of the Blue. Shawshank Redemption uses this idea when the character Warden Norton orders Captain Hadley kills Tommy, this happens when Tommy has just told Andy and Red about how he had met the guy that had actually committed Andy’s crime however when Andy goes to tell Norton, Norton denies to help him and doesn’t believe him this is when Warden Norton requests to speak to Tommy privately about what he had said and to see if he was telling the truth and if he would testify for Andy this part of the film uses dialogue between Andy and Norton to show that Tommy plays a big part in the new situation “you know that wouldn’t matter. With Tommy’s testimony I can get a new trial.”- Andy) although we think that this is just a conversation and something good will happen for Andy Tommy is brutally shot from behind and left on the ground to die. Out of the Blue uses this idea when the character David Gray brutally murders 13 people for no reason including children. this occurs when David has just had an argument with his neighbour about trespassing “ Get out of it, you trespassing Holden!”/“Hey don’t talk to my kids like that. Calm down David”/“Don’t you tell me what to do! Think you’re king of Aramoana.”and out of nowhere shoots his neighbour then chases after his kids which then leads to him murdering more people that cross his path here the director uses a wide shot to show what is happening between both characters for example with the wide shot used viewers can see the reaction of the conversation between both characters. this shows the reader that violent crime can happen in different ways it is not always what people mostly assume for example beating of another person or a messy murder scene.

I think we see a very clear similarity between Point Break and Out of the blue with the theme of conservative lifestyle crime, because in Point Break the group that does the crime which is robbery of banks are infact surfers however they are not just any surfers they have a belief in surfing which has become apart of them extremely for example bodhi the main surfer in this film is the leader and convinces the others to do what he does it almost seems as if he has brainwashed them slightly, bodhi believes that you must be daring to surf any condition and one with the ocean the belief they have in surfing is part of why they do the robberies and are so good at them e.g not getting caught by the police dialogue is shown in this part when “they’re like Ghosts”. and in Out of the blue it is set in a small rural New Zealand town where it is very far from anything for example we see this setting in the beginning of the film when it is very quiet and it introduces where the place is and what it looks like music is used in this part of the film it is quiet and subtle and has a calming beach tone to show what Aramoana is. here the director is showing us that these two texts are trying to speak out to society about how things that seem so quiet and subtle can be misleading because sometimes with places for example a rural small town people in a society assume that nothing will happen and it is safe. also with Point Break it is more for Beliefs “Peace, through superior firepower.” “ If you want the ultimate, you’ve got to be willing to pay the ultimate price. It’s not tragic to die doing what you love.” and how they can make you think the opposite of something and make you think that it is a good thing when it is wrong. I think what the directors are trying to get across is that there are things that can be misleading and they can turn out to be something big or small and affect everyone.

A significant connection i made between some of my chosen texts, Witness and Out of the Blue is that the characters have similar characteristics of unexpected crime this is common in the texts because the characters show us things about this particular genre such as being in a totally different sense than a murder would usually be in. for example in Witness people wouldn’t think that a murderer usually wouldn’t be part of the police force/ an officer himself. Because typically people part of  the police force are supposed to be good however unexpectedly it has twist and turns out that one of the police officers himself  was the killer. Also in Out of the Blue we see that David is not a nice looking guy he seems suspicious however you wouldn’t guess that he would go and kill everyone in his way/neighbourhood especially when he already had killed one person that caused it in the first place you would think that he would stop but no that’s what makes this unexpected in the film. this proves to the viewer that having a characteristics of not being well or in the right head space like David you can end up having a trigger which makes you do things you wished you hadn’t. In a part of the film with david the director has used a close up shot of david’s face to show his reaction when his mind is messing with him.

In conclusion i made two significant connections between texts about crime. I think that in all four of these texts the Directors were trying to show different aspects of crime that can happen in all kinds of ways for example unexpected crime in Out of the Blue came from David being sick he wasn’t in the greatest mind set which caused him to do what he did, violent crime in Shawshank Redemption came from Warden Norton brutally murdering Tommy, Conservative lifestyle crime in Point Break came from bodhi’s belief extreme belief in surfing. Also crime in all of the texts shows that what happens can affect everyone not just the people that you see who get affect the most.

SUSPICIONS TAKE OVER

In my play my character does not have name in the script it just says woman however i have chosen to name my character Sandy.  My character is a married woman but she has not been married that long so I believe she is 35 years old.  In the play my character is up all night worrying about what is happening next door to her apartment and she makes up alot of scenarios about what could be happening this shows me that my character is  crazy or alittle bit out of her mind but i assume that she wants to help people that are in trouble. What my character does to get what she wants/makes what she wants happen she thinks of every possible solution to help the woman next door that is in trouble some this are she calls the police (near the end) she wants to go over there and help herself.

Realtionships my character has with other characters in the scene are with sam, sam is sandys husband they live together in their apartment. Another relationship my character has is with the person next door the woman in the other apartment to the woman sandy is a stranger but throughout the play she listens in on what is happening and eventually tries to help her.

A problem my character has is that she cannot get sleep because she hers nosies next door to her apartment and as she keeps listening she starts to make up scanrios about what is hapening and it tends to scare her also her husband tries to calm her down and says it is just the wind however further into the scene they both start figure out what is happening and keep getting scared.

They way my perfmance ends is sandy and sam have a fight about how sandy wants to help the woman as she has come to the conculsion that they woman next door is being attacked so sandy tries to help but sam is attempting to stop her but when they finish fighting they hear police trying to get into the next door apartment that woman was in this then concludes their suspicions.

In the end yes my character gets what she wants as the police comes to save/help the woman that was being attacked.

How the sistuation ends for my character along with the others is the woman is saved and sandy and sam are finally able to go to sleep.

What i want my audience to understand about my character and her experience is when you are scared or hear something bad happening dont get ahead of yourself and stay calm and think of the best possible solution for what might be happening and then act on it dont wait to be sure or try and help yourself call the appropriate services for the situation.

Character Analysis/ Statement of Intent

Character: Barbara Pitts

I know about my character that  She is 45 years old i also know that she is a theatre tectonic/company member that is helping to interview some residents of Laramie about the incident.

I assume that my character i you were to meet her would come across quiet vibrated and happy, i assume she most of the time is a workaholic and works well with a work partner. For my character Barbara i do not know a lot about her but i assume that she is a mother however  her kids all be grown up and have their own lives, i assume she is a very colorful and vibrant person she also would b the kind of person to wear lots of bright colorful clothes but at work she would wear a bit more of lightly bright clothes like a more subtle kind of colors.

Statement of intent:

Through my character i want the audience to get that she is a happy person and likes her job because she meets new people, i also want the audience to get that she gets quiet fascinated when she sees new things and goes to new places. I will show the audience how my character is fascinated by using hand gestures to show how Barbara would explain/show how she see’s things to people for example with the hand gestures i use i will tell the audience what stuff the firesdie has and slightly point to where they might be in the bar. Also i would use facial expressions to show how my character is feeling and how she would react in the situations that are there in the story for example as we get up to the part where conny (jarrah) is expressing how against she is about gay’s i would look very angry and show that my character perhaps does not  agree and it upsets her to hear some talk about it that way.

Speech – Gloriavale

Gloriavale

About:

Gloriavale Christian Community is a small Christian group based at Haupiri on the West Coast of the South Island in New Zealand. Gloriavale was founded in the 1960s by Neville Cooper now know to his group as Hopeful Christian), who in 1994 was jailed for 1 year for indecent assault upon several young girls.

History:

The christian community was founded by Cooper who before the group was an Australian-born evangelist who was invited to preach in New Zealand. He founded what became known as the Springbank Christian Community near Christchurch in the South Island this was the very first gloriavale when the group was only very small with a lot less people  When this community grew too big for its property, the members bought land on the West Coast and shifted there over a period from 1991 to 1995. They named their new property in the Haupiri Valley “Gloriavale” and then became established as the Gloriavale Christian Community. This property is about 60 km inland from Greymouth. In 1995 Neville Cooper was jailed for almost a year on sexual abuse charges. He was convicted based on the testimony of his son and of a young woman who had fled the compound.

Known by some outsiders as the “Cooperites”, the group rejects this name and members refer to themselves only as Christians. Members of the community live a fundamentalist Christian life in accordance with their interpretation of the teachings of the New Testament. The community attempts to uphold the example of the first Christian church in Jerusalem (Acts 2:41-47) for its principles of sharing and holding all things in common. The group teaches that the only true way to salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ and obedience to the commands of God. The community earns its income from several ventures including dairying and the manufacture of They also run deer and sheep farms as well as run charter/scenic flights from Greymouth. Those who leave the community are shunned and denied contact with family members still remaining at Gloriavale. Many families in the past year have fled gloriavale because they now realize that they have been living under a false system. One family of 14 have said they are living with a “normal” family and are slowly getting back to society.  Gloriavale is home to more than 90 families with couples that have up to 12 children which is quite  common in this community. Most of the community members have come from all over the world to follow in the teachings of god.

Perspectives:

Many ex members of Gloriavale who had fled the community had once said that what they were taught was good it was the right way to live but after escaping the community they have said to various news media that they have realize they were probably being brainwashed by the leaders and many things that happen in there are completely different to the outside world so their views have hugely changed.

While the rest of the new Zealand public have set their points of view on how wrong Gloriavale is and how it should be stop for the protection of the children.

Ancedote:

My cousin and her friends one day at school called the number gloriavale
